Hybrid Car MOT Test

Does my hybrid vehicle need an MOT? In short, yes.

Every vehicle over three years old needs an MOT certificate to be deemed roadworthy. No car over this age can legally drive on the road without one, except in very specific circumstances or if the car is more than 40 years old.

The MOT test is designed to examine the safety and roadworthiness of your vehicle. Hybrid vehicles are submitted to the same rigorous testing as any other vehicle. Without a valid MOT certificate, you will be unable to renew your car’s insurance.

Are there different types of hybrid cars?

  • Mild Hybrid

This type of hybrid car would be classed as the most ‘traditional’ hybrid car on the market. It’s a combination of a petrol or diesel engine with a small electric motor which helps reduce emissions and improve fuel economy.

  • Full Hybrid

Very similar to a mild hybrid, a full hybrid is the combination of an electric motor and a battery pack with a more standard gasoline engine. A full hybrid can drive on electric-only, unlike a mild hybrid which can only run on a combination of electric and fuel engines.

  • Plug-in Hybrid

A plug-in hybrid is very similar to a full hybrid in terms of technology e.g. it combines an electric motor with a standard gasoline engine, the only difference is, the plug-in hybrid has a much bigger battery so it can hold more charge and therefore travel further distances.
